UNMASKED/MASKED (article first published : 2001-03-29)

The focus of the new art group 3rd eye vision is to create a platform where young people can come together no matter what their interests, in order to create change through strength and variety. 3rd eye visionís first exhibition opens at 18h30 at 37 Crart Avenue (off Moore Road) on March 30 to run until April 15. It includes a selection of work titled Unmasked/Masked by Zamani Makhanya, the result of a workshop held with Sfiso kaMkame who is celebrated for his mastery of the pastel medium. Zamaniís work is also characterised by colour, texture, symbolism and a deep African spirituality.

The exhibition will feature the names of the future. Young Durban artists such as Gabi Ngcobo, Zamaxolo Dunywa, Khwezi Gule, Langa Magwa, Thando Mama, Clive Sithole, David Haigh, Sharlene Khan, Phathuxolo Goniwe, Daniel Sheldon and Phahlo Mtangai. The exhibition opening will host music by Madala Kunene, Sazi Dlamini and Yolanda Sangweni. Bandile Gumbi and Thokozane Mthiyane will present a programme of poetry.

ďA new era has dawned,Ē says Gabi Ngcobo, ďand as young people we try to redefine ourselves and our role in facilitating the change that needs to happen. There is a need to fuse all people and all activities into one coherent whole whichever becomes simpler and more complete.

The event is dedicated to the spirit of the late jazz pianist Moses Taiwa Molelekwa. Gallery times are from 09h00 to 16h30. More details from Gabi Ngcobo on 082 743-2306 or Zamani Makhanya on 082 862-6774.
