BLUE CATERPILLAR (article first published : 2001-03-16)

The Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery is a dynamic new venue for the promotion and selling of local artists’ work. This gallery is part of the Butterflies for Africa complex in Pietermaritzburg which will house the Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery, the Painted Lady Coffee Shop, a butterfly breeding farm, an education centre and ultimately, an impressive walk-through butterfly conservatory.

”We are currently looking for art to exhibit and welcome the art of newcomers as well as established artists” says Sonia Hayes. “We are also interested in a wide range of styles and disciplines including drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture and ceramics.”

Butterflies for Africa hopes to establish itself as a popular and innovative venue and also as a must-see tourist attraction for both local and international travellers. A web-site with on-line selling will also ensure that the art exhibited reaches a wider audience and regular exhibitions to maintain and promote public interest.

“We have the advantage of falling into many tourist routes and Meanders which will increase our exposure as well as offering locals a refreshing haven to escape to,” explains Sonia.

The Butterflies for Africa complex and the Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery open in April. Work will be taken on a consignment basis with a commission added and regularly rotated to retain the “fresh” feeling that the Blue Gallery Art Gallery wishes to promote.

“In the case of drawings and paintings, we prefer unframed work – unless the framing is of a high standard” Sonia says. Contact her on (033) 387 1330 or email (see above).
