THOMAS BAINES PRINTS (article first published : 2001-03-6)

The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery's main feature in March will be a portfolio of prints of watercolours by the renowned 19th century artist/writer of Africana, Thomas Baines.

Born in 1820 in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England, Thomas Baines died in Durban in 1875 having spent three lengthy periods living in South Africa.

A self-taught painter, he has produced over 400 scenes of Africa, making strong use of vivid colour. Subjects include landscapes, shipping scenes, interiors, figures, birds, animals, plants and war skirmishes and he also painted a number of portraits of Cape Town notability. An apprenticed coach painter until the age of 20, he was also an explorer who made a number of botanical and entomological discoveries as well as cartographer and prospector.

"For those interested in Africana, a pleasing feature of Baines' paintings was his habit of including with the picture, the exact date, place and description of the scene," says Elizabeth Gordon Gallery owner, Joy Reynolds.
