PULSE (article first published : 2001-02-24)

PULSE is an initiative set up by Durban artist Greg Streak with the aim of creating a platform for interaction and debate for the visual arts in South Africa through projects conducted on an annual basis.

He curated the hugely successful “open-circuit” exhibition and accompanying mini-conference in November 2000 which sought to address the interface between technology and tradition - the collision or fusion between Hi-tech and Lo-tech structures. Both exhibition and conference brought to Durban artists and guest speakers from other regions in South Africa as well as from abroad.

In a follow up one-week exhibition which opens on February 27 at 18h00 to run to March 4 at the NSA Galleries, Greg Streak has created a display which combines the photographic work of Jo Ractliffe (South Africa) and the film of Sebastian Diaz Morales (Argentina)

"Whilst the earlier exhibition open-circuit looked at the diversity of the interface between first and third worlds in the hybrids that emerge from the fusion of technology with tradition essentially moving from the core theme outward,“ says Greg Streak, “this follow up show open-circuit (closing) - moves inward again focusing on context relative to the thematic umbrella.

“Ractliffe and Diaz Morales have produced works that address the central theme but have done so by focusing directly on context Durban. Neither artist lives in Durban and the result allows some fresh and varied interpretations of a place we probably thought we knew very well".

Ractliffe has produced a photographic work that although only 20cm in height will span 20 meters wrapping itself around the gallery walls. Diaz Morales film will be projected onto the main wall of the Gallery space.

The opening of this event will also see the launch of the publication of both exhibitions and conference. All papers from the conference as well as the work of all the artists thus far represented in the PULSE project are contained in this publication. The catalogue will be on sale at the opening for a nominal fee.
