VAL ADAMSON EXHIBITION (article first published : 2000-12-9)

Adding to the festive season attractions will be an exhibition of photography by respected Durban photographer Val Adamson at the popular Décor & Decaf @ The Furniture Guild in Florida Road, Durban. Working together with James Siedle and Colleen Nicholas of Natural Outlook, a décor company which has set national precedents in interior innovations, she has created a small and focused showcase of limited edition prints. This will be exhibited in the intimate atmosphere of Lyrene Zimmerman's stylish Décor & Decaf shop in Morningside.

Val Adamson has already produced three exhibitions of creative photographic work: Caught in the Act (1989) which focused on her theatre and live performance work, and AGFA's Textured Lives I & II (1993 & 95) which placed well-known theatre and arts personalities placed in unusual natural settings. Val Adamson also works as a stills photographer for films, the most recent being The Cell starring Jennifer Lopez which is currently on circuit.

For the exhibition at Décor & Decaf, Val has selected a combination of photographs from her last two exhibitions as well as some signed limited editions of striking new works. She uses fibre-based paper which enhances the tonal qualities of the photographs to excellent effect.

"Fine-art photography is highly collectable," says Lyrene Zimmerman of Décor & Decaf, "There is growing interest in photography as a sought-after art form which has increasing investment potential. Using photography as an integral part of interior design is extremely evocative and effective. Photography manages to reflect a whole range of emotions in a way that, I think, other art mediums do not."

Natural Outlook, known for its upmarket décor designerware, has recently launched a range of framing which reflects the contemporary simplistic approach to interior design. "Val's photographs are perfect for the new styles of framing" says Colleen Nicholas, "The uncluttered lines complement her work in a really interesting way."

The exhibition opens on December 14 at 18h00 and runs until December 28.
