DONATIONS TO DAG (article first published : 2000-12-4)

Well-known South African artists, Andrew Walford and Marion Arnold, have generously donated works to the Durban Art Gallery.

Master potter Andrew Walford has donated one of his large tiles titled Zulu Wedding Cape Plaque. “The inspiration for the tiles came about when I was visiting architect Paul Mikula’s office,” he says. He had three magnificent bead capes, isikhoti, hanging on his wall. I was immediately struck with the possibility of making a huge tile with layers of porcelain and stoneware and patterns of different coloured clays pressed in. Textures on the surface of the layers represent the Shongweni krantzes at sunset, the warm clay colour of African soil, splodges of wood ash from the surrounding indigenous forest add texture and subtle colour.” Tiles of a similar nature by Andrew Walford adorn the bar area of the International Convention Centre (ICC).

Soon to move to Britain, artist Marion Arnold has donated Red Data: the Tyranny of Language 1999, a work from a series she produced during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings. It has been hung in the revamped Gallery 1 next to Wilma Cruise’s Bully Boys and David Koloane’s depiction of Workers. The image developed from the memorable photograph of Jeffrey Benzien when he testified at the TRC hearings and demonstrated the wet bag torture. The subject is particularly South African and fills a much-needed gap in the Durban Art Gallery holdings with regard to its historical content.
