RED EYE @RT (article first published : 2000-11-25)

Red Eye @rt is a Friends of the Durban Art Gallery initiative to attract a younger set to the gallery and its attractions.

On December1, the Ningizimu School for the Severely Mentally Handicapped will present an exhibition incorporating a web-site link-up, a photographic display entitled Picture My Life as well as their stunning, large-scale beaded tapestries for which they are renowned. If you aren’t familiar with their work, check out the foyer/main bar area of the Playhouse.

Other exhibitions include works by blind artist Dan Rakgoathe; Willem Boschoff (Blind Alphabet); fine art students from Technikon Natal and Alan Alborough, this year’s winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art. There will also be an architectural display by third year University of Natal Durban architecture students

On the design front, final year fashion students Chris Makanya and Constance Khoza from ML Sultan Technikon will present their designs which appeared at the fashion show in October and there will be an exhibition by third year jewellery design students from Technikon Natal.

French artist/choreographer Anne de Beaufort, working in conjunction with Lliane Loots of the Flatfoot Dance Company, will present a dance/performance piece which incorporates painting and explores the themes of “Space” and “Territory”.

Live bands featured are Lilo, an alt-country/lo-fi rock duo who played at Oppikoppi 2000, as well as hot new punk/hip-hop rappers Dwarf Project Crew. To end the evening with rousing rhythms, Red Eye @rt-ers can enjoy a performance by the Steel Drum Foundation.

Red Eye @rt kicks off at 18h00 sharp at the Durban Art Gallery, City Hall, Smith Street. Entrance R15 for non-members (R10 for students or members). More details from Liana on (031) 311-2264/68 or fax (031) 311-2273.
