DEATH OF JEFF CHANDLER (article first published : 2000-09-22)

Popular and talented Durban artist Jeff Chandler died this morning (September 22) in Entabeni Hospital. He had been in intensive care for a week after falling from the stairs at his home and injuring his head.

A lecturer in the fine arts department of Technikon Natal and a past-president of the NSA, he played a very instrumental role in getting the new NSA building off the ground. He was in charge of the outreach programme of the NSA workshops which benefited disadvantaged children and adults and was himself a very talented painter.

“All of us here at the Tech, colleagues and students, are still in a state of shock,” says Jeremy Wafer, acting head of the fine art department and a past president of the NSA.“ Jeff has been teaching here for 22 years and has had a tremendous influence on the artistic lives of generations of students. He was a passionate teacher and a wonderful painter and draftsman. He brought to his studio teaching of figure drawing - and painting, especially - a passionate belief in art as a humane activity, a matter of feeling and human engagement rather than fashion and acclaim.

Apart from his own work as an artist and teacher he put a huge amount into the community. As past president of the NSA, as the editor and driving force behind the Newsart and the NSA art training programmes. He will be sorely missed.”

Jeff Chandler is survived by his wife Pascale and their son Claude. Pascale’s exhibition opens on Sunday afternoon (September 24) at 16h00 at NSA Galleries and is titled tender moments. A memorial service will be held at the NSA (date to be announced).
