PETER MATTHEWS (article first published : 2000-09-10)

Featured artist for the month of September at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery is Peter Matthew, an artist who believes that life is a paradox: “The contradiction of dark and light,” he explains. “Without light nothing would be visible because in darkness we are blind. And yet, with only light and no shadow there would be no shape, only flat colour like a cartoon. In order for us to observe form, there must be shadow.”

Peter Matthew’s work explores the modelling of light and darkness which he best expresses through the human form. For it is in man’s spirit that this conflict between light and dark continually wages war,” he says. “Often form is lost as the subjects merge into the background shadows.”

Working in oil, pastel and pencil, Peter tries to capture his subjects’ internal spiritual state with the external play of light and shadow which model their form.
