HERITAGE DAY ART (article first published : 2000-09-4)

The Durban Art Gallery will host the Heritage Day Exhibition from September 22 to October 30. This exhibition has become an annual fixture, taking the concept of Heritage Day within the South African museum environment. It commemorates “tangible and intangible culture” and reflects the kind of education that cultural institutions should offer.

This year, the exhibition is subtitled Endowment and the aim is to explore the role of heritage in society and promote social and cultural commentary. It also gives voice and encouragement to learners who exhibit alongside established artists. The work covers a variety of skills taught at the DAG workshops, such as traditional Zulu beadmaking and beadwork on fabric.

DAG education officer Pat Khoza will also use the event to pay tribute to two artists who died earlier this year – Bonnie Ntshalintshali and Tito Zungu.

There will be a guided tour of the Heritage Day 2000 exhibition on September 28 at 13h00. More details on (031) 300-6235.
