ATELIER ART (article first published : 2000-08-23)

The 16th annual Absa Atelier Art competition for 2001 is now officially open. Artists between the ages of 21 - 35 are invited to start working on their pieces which must be delivered to the South African National Association for the Visual Arts offices and selected venues around the country early in March next year.

Billed as the premier art competition in the country with the highest value in prize money, Atelier consistently attracts the cream of young South African talent every year. This year’s exhibition attracted a daring exploration of new ideas and mixed media and most of the entries came from Gauteng. However, artists in the other provinces are urged to enter the 2001 competition. Rewards are worthwhile as the top winner receives R60,000, a round trip to Paris and a coveted opportunity to live and work for six months with artists in the Cité International des Arts in the heart of Paris. Each of the four runners-up receives R10,000.

Through the exposure provided by Atelier, artists are given the opportunity to gain recognition locally as well as internationally. This year several of the entries were purchased and for some artists, it was the first time they had made money from their craft. Absa itself purchased two contemporary pieces: merit award winner Joni Brenner's Recollect: Reconnect mixed media work and Jacki McInnes-Graham's untitled embossed lead sculpture.

More details and entry forms from branches of the South African National Association for the Visual Arts, universities, technikons, galleries and museums nationwide or by calling Absa on (011) 350-5793 or (012) 328 7109.
