BELL AND JORDAN (article first published : 1999-04-11)

An exhibition by Brendon Bell, director of the Tatham Art Gallery, and Judy Jordan, curator of Newcastle's Carnegie Art Gallery, will be opened by Andrew Verster at the Bayside Gallery at the BAT Centre at 17h30 on April 15.

Bayside Gallery's Sue Greenberg acknowledges the pivotal role played by the two artists in promoting art in KZN.

"With this exhibition, they offer their own interpretations of time and memory in a South African context," she said.

Both artists work with mixed media, experimenting with collage images.

Through the theme of abandoned places, Judy Jordan explores the past, time and recollection. These are themes mirrored in her treatment of the work. Her materials are worked and reworked, leaving fragments of the original.

Similarly, Brendon Bell's work has a nostalgic quality and his collection of ceramic pieces and wooden sculptures depicted in his work reflects not only his appreciation of indigenous cultural production but also the past which these pieces represent.

The exhibition runs until April 31.
