KWA-SHUKELA COMMUNITY GALLERY (article first published : 2000-07-23)

Kwa-Shukela Community Gallery is the new gallery in the cane fields at Mount Edgecombe. The foyer of the new sugar industry building has been developed into an open style display and exhibition area. The beautiful Indonesian architecture with its imposing pillars and intricate beams create a perfect ambience for artworks.

The Gallery is situated at 170 Flanders Drive, Mount Edgecombe (opposite Mt Edgecombe Health & Racquet), and is only 10 minutes from the centre of Umhlanga. Kwa Shukela, being the representative centre of the sugar industry, attracts thousands of visitors each year - be they industry suppliers, customers, visitors and students or conference delegates using the new 108-seater auditorium.

As conference bookings in the new facility increase, so traffic through the gallery is sure to increase. The Gallery is now available for exhibition use by local artists throughout the year and the main “hanging space” is approximately 12 x 6m plus some peripheral wall space.

Gallery co-ordinator Kari Haesloop requests that artists and exhibition curators take responsibility for all hanging, logistical and marketing arrangements. Work may be previewed and sold at their own arrangement. A small “Hampers” canteen, housed on the lower terrace overlooking the wide verandah and cane fields, can provide cocktail functions of any size and theme.

If you would like to set up an exhibition, call Kari at SA Sugar Association on (031) 508-7027, fax (031) 508 7191 or e-mail: karihae@sasa.org.za
