VISUAL HUMMING (article first published : 2000-06-29)

Imvunge Photographers first presented an exhibition at the Durban Art Gallery in 1999 as a supplement to the World Press Photo exhibition. Their association with Musa Mncwabe, the education officer at the Durban Art Gallery, and Moses Khusiba has continued and an exhibition aimed to draw people’s attention to the seriousness of HIV/AIDS will form part of the Amasiko cultural programme which forms part of the XIII International Aids Conference taking place in Durban from July 9 to 14..

Positioned in the Durban Art Gallery’s Gallery 4, this project is not geared to make AIDS a commodity; it is structured to create awareness and serve as a therapeutic exercise for people who are directly or indirectly involved in HIV/AIDS issues. These photographs try to capture the appearance of a moment in time, however the under layers of emotion, suffering and trauma within the content can not be visually expressed.
