BOERASSIC PARK COMPETITION (article first published : 2000-06-17)

Evita se Perron, the vibrant little theatre complex in Darling run by actor and satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys, has a special garden called Boerassic Park. It mixes fantasy and fiction, real and unreal, past and present. And houses among the cacti of the West Coast, a birdcage in the shape of the Voortrekker Monument, 400 plastic flowers and a clutter of garbage-bag chickens! Now it needs political dinosaurs! With such a scenario, Pieter Dirk Uys’s alter-ego Evita Bezuidenhout has to be involved! The cry is “We want politicians to quake in their boots - once they've been unveiled in Boerassic Park, they have arrived!”

The Boerassic Park competition is open to all artists who are invited to create a statue or work of satirical comment reflecting the history of South Africa. These include “humorous statues of past leaders with fingers on triggers, funny busts of present politicians with hands in cookie-jars, impressions of legends with hints of scandal, corruption” and more! The winner wins R10,000 with runners-up invited to exhibit their work in the Park on a permanent basis. Evita se Perron attracts visitors from all over the world and the Boerassic Park Exhibition is expected to be unique and controversial.

“Already we have a bust of Hendrik Verwoerd as a standing lamp and a Voortrekker Monument as a gramophone,” says a representative of the venue who sounds suspiciously like the inimitable Evita. “What about a Winnie scarecrow? Patricia and the seven PAC dwarfs? Alan Boesak as a vrot Danish pastry? Eugene in steel underpants? Old broeders, new buti's? All South Africans!”

The deadline is September1 and the public will contribute to the voting process. Evita Bezuidenhout will announce the winner and present the prize on September 17, the last day of the Hello Darling Festival.
