DIROZOULOU (article first published : 2000-06-3)

Some 18 months ago, French artist Herve di Rosa, arrived at the Bat Centre to begin the Dirozoulou adventure. Durban has been the eighth stop as part of his Around the World series of art works made in collaboration with indigenous artist and crafters from countries as diverse as Bulgaria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cuba, Vietnam and Mexico.

Working with telephone wire weavers, Elliot Ndwandwe, Alice Grab, Zodwa Maphumulo, Vincent Sithole and Simon Mavundla from Siyanda informal settlement outside Durban, the collaboration has pushed all the boundaries to produce the biggest telephone wire art works to date. Many rolls of brightly coloured telephone wire later, the large vibrant mandala attest to the design virtuosity of the diminutive di Rosa, transcending the boundaries of the medium and the restricted palette. Cross-cultural fertilisation has led to the universal imagery interspersed with local icons as in Marine Parade in a contemporary visual language.

Dirozoulou runs at the Bat Centre's Menzi Mcunu Gallery until June 6. From the Bat Centre the exhibition will travel to the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg where it opens on July 11. Thereafter it goes on to Paris.
