ABSA WINS BASA AWARD (article first published : 2000-05-20)

At the Business and Arts South Africa/Business Day awards ceremony last week Nallie Bosman, CEO of Absa, accepted the award for Best Use of a Commission of New Art from Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. "This recognition of Absa's dedication to the arts is a prize we accept most gratefully," said Bosman.

The award was for Absa's commission of original South African artworks, integrated into the design of the new head office in Johannesburg. The space demanded that the works be colossal in size. One such piece is the largest known wire sculpture of an African fertility figure (11 meters high). Another is the world's largest kinetic mobile which depicts the modern Johannesburg skyline in constant juxtaposition to the old. "The building is a permanent showcase of the talent we have in the country," says Bosman. "Foreign visitors are astounded when they see what we have done in the city."

Absa has been a member of BASA since its inception in 1997 and fully understands the necessity for corporate South Africa to involve itself directly, both in a financial and spiritual sense, in the promotion of the country's diverse arts and culture.
