UMGHUBHO ART (article first published : 1999-05-17)

The exhibition of work by Mozambican artists and sculptors that was scheduled to be on show in the Menzi Mcunu Gallery at the BAT Centre at present is still sitting in Maputo, being held back by customs officials who are demanding a large amount of money to release the works.

Until, and if, the situation is resolved and the works eventually reach Durban, the BAT Centreís visual arts co-ordinator Njabulo Hlongwane has scouted around the resident artists and selected a pleasing and wide-ranging collection of work which is now on show in the gallery.

These include new and vibrant pastels by Amarildo Alberto titled Ladies in the Markets and The Dancers as well as some beautifully produced works by Monja Mitchell of BATís printmaking studio. Other works include Sandile Zuluís Going to Work and an untitled piece by Gordon Gabashane. Mpolokeng Rampomane is represented by Ashes of a Sellout and African Musk.
