STUDENTS DESIGN WEBSITE (article first published : 2000-05-17)

The NSA Gallery recently entered into a partnership with Mediatek Electronic Solutions for the design of its website. The well-known IT company is recognised as providing the highest standards of training in desktop publishing, web design and development as well as multimedia authoring and digital graphic design and, as part of Mediatek's commitment to providing industry-related education, its digital graphic design students were offered the opportunity to design and develop a comprehensive website for the NSA Gallery as an examination project.

The NSA Gallery’s brief stipulated that the website design was to be user-friendly and in magazine format allowing for updates. The site needed to incorporate the vibrancy of the NSA as well as all its facets, ranging from education and developmental activities to its exhibition programme. It also needs to reflect the latest developments in Web technology and applications with fast download time despite the strong focus on visuals and images. Its main function will be to promote and advertise the NSA and all its activities, while providing a visual and textual safety-net for discourse generated through these activities.

Twelve students, each trying to prove their superior design skills and competence, have entered the website competition. The panel to select the final design on June 1 are Jeremy Wafer (NSA Gallery president and head of fine arts department, Technikon Natal), Jane du Randt (NSA vice-president and freelance architect), David Jorre de St Jorre (Edumac), Kirsten Wolff (graphic fesign lecturer, Mediatek) and Storm Janse van Rensburg (NSA Gallery curator). The winning design and website will be announced and launched on June 6 at the NSA’s Annual General Meeting. The winning designer will be presented with an original artwork as well as a cash prize.
