SCAFFOLDING ARTISTS (article first published : 2000-05-15)

Eight art students are currently working hard at a mural on the Broad Street Satellite Police Station. Finalists in the Art Against Crime mural competition which offers a R10 000 bursary for art tuition at a recognised tertiary institution, they will be painting furiously for the next six weeks. The competition is sponsored by The Independent on Saturday Nedbank Property Division and Molovuso Holdings and the murals will be officially unveiled on June 29 as part of the urban renewal project which sees the old Belgica Hotel turned into attractive affordable housing with a commuinity centre.

The finalists are Avilash Bugwandeen, Mlungisi Mkhize, Bransby Gorrie, Santhieran Munsamy, Vaneshree Adimulam, Ntuthuko Mbatha, Poovernesen Govender and Samantha Govender. They were chosen by curator of the NSA Galleries Storm Janse van Rensburg and his assistant Nkosinathi Gumede, art teacher and interior designer Bevan Goddard and Suzy Bell, leisure editor of The Independent on Saturday
