THE INDIAN EXPERIENCE – 2008 (article first published : 2008-08-18)

Opening on August 21, The Satyagraha Exhibition will be part of the six-week long Indian Experience festival in Durban hosted by the Consulate General of India in association with Teamwork Productions, New Delhi, and with the support of a number of Indian and South African sponsors and partners.

The Indian Experience will be the most ambitious and extravagant of Indian cultural festivals to be staged in Durban and will take place from August 21 until October 2, 2008.

The Satyagraha Collection of Paintings at the Durban Art Gallery will be launched along with the official release of commemorative coins of Mahatma Gandhi by the SA Mint on August 21 at the Durban Art Gallery.

This is the first time that South Africa will be issuing coins on Mahatma Gandhi. The event is being hosted jointly by the Ethekwini Municipality, the Gandhi Development Trust, the Durban Art Gallery, the SA Mint Company and the Consulate General of India.

The South African Mint will officially release coins featuring Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) as part of its 2008 Protea Coin Series. The SA Mint is committed to manufacturing commemorative coins that are true and reflective of South African History and Heritage. The Protea series commemorates various aspects and important events in the history of South Africa. In 2005, a theme celebrating the Nobel Peace Prize Winners of South Africa commenced with Chief Albert Luthuli as the first of South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize winners. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was featured on the 2006 Protea coins and the joint Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Frederik Willem de Klerk completed this theme in 2007.

The Protea coins series consists of three coins: 1 oz 24ct gold, 1/10th oz 24 ct gold and a R1 silver coin. Only 600 Mahatma Gandhi coins to commemorate the official launch on August 21 will be minted globally. These are collectors’ items and will be available for sale (in limited quantities) immediately after the reception which is by invitation only. A total of 5,000 Gandhi sets and 7,000 individual coins will also be minted.

The Satyagraha Collection of Paintings runs from August 21 to 30 at the Durban Art Gallery. More information from Jenny Stretton at the Durban Art Gallery on 031 311 2262/6 or email: strettonj@durban.gov.za
