MACS AUGUST DIARY (article first published : 2008-08-10)

The Midlands Arts and Crafts Society (MACS) in Pietermaritzburg is currently hosting work in the various mediums used by MACS Teachers in the Café Gallery. The 3D Gallery has Treasures & Trifles - working on the theme that “what may be your “trifle” may be another person’s “treasure”. New items are added as others are sold.

In addition to the exhibition, MACS offers a busy programme of classes.

Mondays (August 4, 10 and 18 from 09h00 to 12h00): Drawing and painting with Penny Forder. Students have the opportunity of developing their own drawing or painting projects with personal advice, guidance and tuition. Working in a group is a fun way of staying motivated and makes problem solving easier. Fee for three sessions: R300 (R255 MACS members). Places limited so please book early by phoning MACS or Penny on 072 143 3008.

Tuesdays (August 5, 12 and 26 from 09h00 to 12h00): Beginners Drawing with Penny Forder. Beginners drawing using the right side of the brain. An intensive course designed to make drawing accessible to anyone. Learn to draw and think like an artist in terms of line, shape, tone and composition. A great course to hone existing drawing skills and revisit the art of drawing. (Bring drawing materials i.e. 3B pencil, eraser, ruler, Stanley/craft knife, fineliner, pen, selection of Koki). Paper will be provided. Fee for four sessions: R395 (R340 MACS members). Places limited so book early through MACS or Penny on 072 143 3008.

Wednesdays (August 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 09h00 to 12h00): MACS Wednesday Art Club – an interactive group working in medium and level of choice. All welcome. R25 per session.

Thursdays (August 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 09h00 to 12h00): Creative Thursdays will concentrate on freestyle machine embroidery, catering for people at all levels of experience. You have to be on good speaking terms with your sewing machine! A portfolio detailing course examples is available at the MACS office, as well as a list of requirements. This is not restricted to "wearable". Fee for four sessions: R395 (R340 MACS members). Fee for one session: R120.

Saturdays are busy days at MACS with Wild Knitting, Beginners Drawing and Freestyle Machine Embroidery classes vying for the space as well as a class with Clare Smith to learn to make flat felt!

Saturdays - Wild Knitting: (August 2 and 16 from 09h00 to 12h00): It’s not nearly as “wild” as you might think. Join us and knit whichever way you like, check out all our gorgeous yarns, and feel better about practically anything by the end of the morning. Bring some yarn and needles, crochet if you like. There is no formal tuition but free advice is given to all by all! Beginners and rusty knitters welcome. R25 per session.

Saturdays - Introduction to Freestyle Machine Embroidery with Jutta Faulds (August 23 and 30 from 09h00 to 12h00): If you want to learn how you can make your sewing machine do what you want it to, then this may be for you. You don’t need a fancy machine for this, but you should be on good terms with the one you have got. A portfolio of class examples is at the MACS office (or check in the craft shop on Saturdays) as well as a list of requirements. R190 for both sessions.
