VICTOR SHANGE EXHIBITION (article first published : 2008-07-20)

Robert Victor Shange is showing his new paintings at the African Art Centre. These are painted with acrylic on canvas and are meticulously detailed small works not exceeding 50 cm overall.

Victor is an emerging artist who is interested in the political events of South African history as well as in the changes in the environment made by settlement and industrial installations. His subject matter covers a wide range of political events beginning with the Anglo Boer war with the defeat of the Zulu Kingdom at the Battle of Isandhlwana (1879), culminating with the arrest and expulsion of King Cetshwayo to London the same year.

More contemporary events are covered showing a memorial to the first ANC Chief Albert Luthuli (1952-1967), Codesa I and II (Convention for a Democratic S.A); The death of Steve Biko (1977), and before the abolition of the death penalty (1955).

The environment is depicted in some of the paintings as being unspoilt and idyllic, and in others showing the encroachment of human settlement and industrial installations, such as pipelines, on the lush and beautiful hills and valleys of KwaZulu-Natal.

Victor's paintings have been collected by provincial museums such as Kwa Muhle Durban, Museum Services Pietermaritzburg, Olundi Museum and Ulundi/Nongoma.

The exhibition runs until August 2 at the African Art Centre which is now situated on the corner of Florida and Argyle Roads. Phone Anthea Martin for more information on 031 312 3805 or 082 828 0211.
