SIBUSISO DUMA AT AVA (article first published : 2008-07-8)

KZN artist Sibusiso Duma is to hold his first solo exhibition in Cape Town at the AVA Gallery, invited by the Association for Visual Arts (AVA) in partnership with Spier.

Sibusiso Duma’s exhibition, curated by Yvette Dunn is titled The Story Teller and it employs the Main gallery of the AVA. He started drawing with crayons and colour pencils from as far back as he can remember. In 1994, he met the late Trevor Makhoba (1956-2003) who was well-known for his controversial and socially critical painting style. Makhoba mentored Duma from 1994-2003 and much of his influence can be seen in Sibusiso Duma's earlier work.

Duma 'stores' his own life experiences, opinions, and “nostalogic” (nostalgia, logic) stories of childhood in his paintings. He is the author and narrator of his works. The figures in his paintings reference illustration and the tradition of storytelling. He makes sense of life today through the stories he tells in his works.

Other artists presenting solo exhibitions concurrently in the AVA gallery are Strijdom van der Merwe and Randolph Hartzenberg.

The three exhibitions open on July 14 at 18h00 and run until August 1 at 13h00. More information from the Association for Visual Arts on 021 424 7436, e-mail: avaart@iafrica.com or visit www.ava.co.za
