CARROL BOYES EXTENDS DEADLINE (article first published : 2008-06-17)

After an impressive response to METAL 2008, the deadline for the Carrol Boyes New Designer Search has been extended until June 30, 2008. This was the natural course for this initiative to take after a flood of last minute phone calls and entries were received from the public. In addition, requests were received from students across the country who expressed regret at not being able to enter due to exam deadlines and work assignment pressures.

“We therefore made the decision to extend the deadline until the end of June. So much of our talent in South Africa lies with the students and we want as many students as possible to be given the opportunity to submit their designs and use METAL as a platform to kick start their careers in this field,” says Carrol Boyes, the founder of the METAL initiative and arguably one of South Africa’s most successful product designers.

Now in its fourth year, METAL has highlighted the vast amount of South African talent and judging by the amount of entries received this year, METAL 2008 has been the most successful since its inception in 2005.

Each year, a unique theme is selected, as a brief to aspirant designers in the country. The theme for this year’s METAL is FRAME – described by Boyes as “an object that may contain or border any article of beauty such as a mirror, an artwork, an image, an item of jewellery or the like.” Designers, artists and creatives are encouraged to enter METAL 2008 by submitting a three-dimensional prototype that fuses three key elements of functionality, manufacturability and aesthetics. The winning designers stand in line to have their work manufactured, marketed and distributed by Carrol Boyes Functional Art and will take home a R50,000 cash prize.

No special experience or qualification is necessary in order to enter. Entrants are required to submit a completed entry form, a copy of their ID and a one page CV with their prototype, to Carrol Boyes Functional Art. To download an entry form, go to http://metal.carrolboyes.co.za or email metal@eclipsepr.co.za. To have an entry form faxed to you, call 0861 325 471.
