COCKS AND ASSES (article first published : 2008-06-2)

Wilma Cruise's 14th solo exhibition will be launched by Carol Brown at the Kizo Art Gallery (Upstairs Gallery) on June 19. Following a very well received run at The Johannesburg Art Gallery, Wilma’s exhibition entitled Cocks and Asses is set to amaze the KwaZulu-Natal art scene.

Wilma’s sculptures are rendered as expressive life-size figures in bronze and ceramic. Some of the works to be displayed are over 3m’s in height and Wilma declared Kizo’s large dramatic industrial space to be perfectly suited to hosting the exhibition. “I use the body as a palette and page in which I project the inchoate and unsaid in an attempt to understand it. It is meaning that remains tantalizingly out of reach, which I seek” Wilma says.

Wilma’s works grace numerous important collections including: The South African National Gallery, The Pretoria Art Museum, The Standard Bank Art Gallery, The Constitutional Court, The Billiton Collection, MTN and The Durban Art Museum amongst numerous others.

The deliberately provocative title Cocks and Asses are in fact totally respectable designations of two kinds of animals and yet are sure to stimulate conversation in their allusion to the bawdy naming of sexual body parts.

Don’t miss this exhibition which is sure to be one of the highlights of KZN’s exhibition calendar for 2008. The exhibition is suitable for all ages and school children and students are encouraged to visit the gallery in order to learn from the work of one of South Africa’s most respected talents.

Cocks and Asses runs from June 20 to July 28. Kizo Art Gallery is situated at Gateway in Umhlanga. More information from Kizo curator Nathi Gumede on 031 566 4324, fax 031 566 2494 or email: nathig@kizo.co.za or visit www.kizo.co.za
