BEAN BAG EXHIBITIONS (article first published : 2008-05-18)

Currently running at Bean Bag Bohemia are several art exhibitions curated by Tamlyn Martin.

The Reception Gallery is hosting Garments, an exhibition of paintings by Jacintha Ellappa. She paints onto stretched garments of family members clothing in an attempt to capture her families’ closeness and the intimate associations that exist between family members, particular garments they have worn and their identity.

“The concept that influenced my paintings is that of my family, my Indian culture, my upbringing and my strong Christian heritage,” explains Jacintha Ellappa. “All these have had a positive influence on which I am today. My works are constructed from items of clothing belonging to the individuals represented which is my Mum, Dad, Sister & I. The fabric suggests the gender roles and the cultural roles that the individuals occupy. It also suggests the femininity of the sari materials as well as the masculinity of my father’s shirt. The pattern and design of the background of the painting was influenced by the garments worn by each individual respectively. This emphasizes the individuality and character. The colours of the sari are indicative of the Indian traditional garment worn by females which is bright, colourful and - each being different - unique with a displace of embroidery, stitching and various beads.” Garments runs until May 30.

In the Salon Galleries is the new Winter Season exhibition under the theme of De-still which runs until October The concept behind the theme is reflective moments and / or essences of grand or humbled, Human, / Historic / Cinematic / Media, narratives that have informed our identity. Currently running are selected works by Simmi Dullay, Raja Oshi, Hussien Salim, Alistair Palmer, Colwyn Thomas, Devin Bauermeister, Moya Evans, Stuart Littler, Jacki Bruniquel and Henni Dreyer. There are two new Patchworks by Joeanne Hoyer titled Random.

Bean Bag Bohemia is situated at the lower end of Windermere Road near Greyville Racecourse. More information on 031 309 6019.
