FROUD SCULPTURES (article first published : 1999-04-11)

The NSA Gallery aims to include exhibitions that are different, interesting and thought-provoking. Such is Aspects of Alice, a collection of sculptural works by Gordon Froud, which runs at the NSA Gallery from April 4 to 22.

Last year was the 100th anniversary of the death of Lewis Carrol, author of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

These books inspired Gordon Froud to produce works containing elements of humour, the absurd and the satirical.

Along with the two Alice books, the artist discovered a third, written by Jeff Noon titled The Annotated Alice, set in 1998 but written in Lewis Carrol's style. This book takes Alice on a journey through cyberspace to present day Manchester with many witty and topical comments along the way.

Gordon Froud has used the three books as the basis for a series of panels to be exhibited in inflated PVC bags.

These draw parallels between the comments in the book and contemporary South African political life. He uses a wide range of contemporary materials and found objects to tell his tales and to explore the surreal and absurd.
