NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. News has been received from Thulani Makhaye, Education Officer of the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg, of the death of Michael Gagashe Zondi on March 15. “He was an integral part of developing many young black artists from KwaZulu-Natal,” explains Thulani Makhaye. “He was also the second black artist to have a solo exhibition in the Durban Art Gallery in the 1960s. In his lifetime he participated in many solo and group exhibitions. His contribution in the South African Contemporary Visual Art has been noted with his inclusion in the New Curriculum Statement Visual Arts Studies syllabus.”
