ROSL ARTS TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP (article first published : 2000-05-7)

Entries invited for ROSL Arts Travel Scholarship where a South African artist stands to win a substantial travel scholarship to the UK as well as the opportunity to show work at a prestige exhibition in Edinburgh and London. Entries must be submitted by May 6.

The Royal Over-Seas League, a non-governmental organisation in London comprising members of the Commonwealth countries, is offering a scholarship for a South African artist to spend five weeks in the UK between July and December this year. Included in the award are return airfares, studio accommodation, full board for one month at the Patrick Alan Foundation at Hospitalfield, a well-known international artist's centre in Arbroath, Scotland, plus a cash prize of 500 and one week's accommodation and hospitality in London or Edinburgh.

The artist's work will also be shown at the ROSL Annual Exhibition 2001 at Over-Seas Houses in Edinburgh and London. It will be a group exhibition of work by ROSL Scholarship 2000 winners from Australia, Bangladesh, Jamaica, South Africa and the UK.

South African artists up to and including the age of 35 living in then Republic may enter. The artworks entered may be paintings in oil or comparable media, watercolour, drawing, mixed media, mono print or semi-relief. Freestanding work, multiple-edition prints and photographs will not be accepted. Artists must submit slides of up to six works completed since January 1999, with a CV and statement. The deadline for applications is May 6, 2000. Judging will take place in London in May.
