VISIONS (article first published : 2008-03-16)

Visions is an exhibition coming to the Kizo Gallery in Gateway which is hailed as “a beautiful duet” by Colleen Maswangayi and Bongi Bengu who currently reside in Pretoria and Johannesburg respectively.

The exhibition is born out the interaction the two artists had when they both took part in an exhibition in Amsterdam curated by Sharlene Khan titled identities.

“If one takes a glance at the exhibition it seems that the two artists are presenting a contradictory exhibition,” says the publicity material. “However with close observations, the layering that is embedded in each of the artists’ work reveals a common concern. If one starts to unpack the similarities, both artist deal with issues of social and contemporary South Africa and its challenges.”

Colleen’s work lingers on issues of stereotypes. Maswangayi is a woodcarver, a practice that is associated with self-taught artist. However, Colleen is the complete opposite of this as he studied at WITS and is aware of all those associations that people make of his work.

Bongi is a South African born artist who spent her childhood in exile in countries like Switzerland, Swaziland and United States of America where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree. In South Africa, she fine-tuned her practice when she completed her Masters in Fine Art in at University of Cape Town.

Visions forms part of Kizo’s strategic change. The gallery is expanding its audiences by including academically-inclined exhibitions.

Visions opens on March 20 at 18h00 and runs in the Kizo Art Gallery (Upstairs Gallery) at Gateway until April 20. More information from Kizo Curator, Nathi Gumede on 031 566 4324 Fax: (031) 566 2494 or email: nathig@kizo.co.za
