SMOKESCREEN (article first published : 2008-03-9)

Opening on March 10 at artSPACE durban is an exhibition in the Middle Gallery of mixed media paintings by Michele Silk titled Smokescreen.

The concept of vulnerability and fragility of life are issues that Michele Silk has had particular interest in, considering the present social conditions in South Africa. In this series of paintings, she juxtaposes images of people with “digital screens” to explore the concept of how one veils or conceals one's vulnerability to others. But also how we take our wellness for granted and, when this is compromised, do we tend to recognise the fragility of life, both physically and emotionally?

Smokescreen runs until March 26 at artSPACE durban which is situated in Millar Road (off Umgeni Road opposite The Waste Centre. More information on 031 312 0793.
