NEW CURATOR FOR KIZO (article first published : 2008-02-20)

Nathi Gumede has taken the reins of Kizo Gateway, the largest privately owned gallery in KwaZulu-Natal. A former curator of the KZNSA Gallery, he brings with him a wealth of experience having worked at the KZNSA for nine years.

Nathi has dedicated the majority of his life to the KwaZulu Natal arts scene and is committed to taking the KZN arts industry to greater heights. A gentle and quietly-spoken man, Nathi puts his success as one of Durbanís most influential curators down to great mentors, determination, a passion for Durbanís artists and lots of hard work. From growing up painting in the townships, working closely on development projects that saw him at the BAT Centre, teaching in the Kwa Mashu township and now finally settling at Kizo.

Not only has Nathi taken on more than 700m2 of spectacular gallery space, but he will also be coordinating The Heritage Arts Festival, the premier arts festival in KwaZulu-Natal and possibly Africa. Over 300 artists, musicians and performers will participate in the 2008 festival and Nathi believes that this festival will provide the marketing platform to kickstart the KZN arts industry.

With a balanced view of the Arts industry Nathi aims to utilize The Kizo brand, The Heritage Arts Festival and several community-based programmes to promote fine South African artists as well as providing them with sustainable income streams.

Kizo has secured several important exhibitions for Kizo in 2008 including a Wilma Cruise Solo, a joint showing by Bongi Bengu and Collen Maswangayi and a Paul Sekete solo. Kizo is situated at Shop G350, outside on the Palm Boulevard at The Gateway Theatre of Shopping. More information on 031 566 4322.
