AFRICA IN CHAINS (article first published : 2007-12-4)

Africa in Chains is part of a solo show by Scottish artist Alex Flett, currently on view at the DUT Gallery, Steve Biko Campus. The 100 x 70 centimetre woodblock print equates the struggle to free Africa of the virus to the struggle to eradicate the slavery which the continent suffered in centuries past.

A former advisor with the Amasiko cultural programme of the XIII International AIDS Conference held in Durban in 2000, Alex Flett has also developed workshops at the XIV Conference in Barcelona, the XV AIDS Conference in Bangkok, and acted as delegate for the SA art charity, Art for Humanity, at the XVI Toronto Conference last year.

The 57 year old artist is also represented in the famous Break the Silence print portfolio and billboard project, launched by Art for Humanity which was recently added to the prestigious collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The current exhibition at DUT, called Durban Odyssey, reflects the artist's seven year association with the City, his membership of the board of Art for Humanity, and with the Fine Art Department of the University of Technology.

Durban Odyssey runs until December 14 at the DUT Gallery. There is secure parking through gate 2 at Steve Biko Campus.

Further information from Nontobeko Ntombela, Curator DUT Gallery, on 031 373 2207.
