NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. In keeping with the spirit of things, the KZNSA Buzzart event encourages festive shoppers to its premises with the promise of gifts that escalate in value. Adorning its walls and floors and outlandishly crafted shelving systems is an exhibition of truly gorgeous editioned artist prints expounded upon by a careful selection of art books, all illuminated with highly dramatic lights by designer darling Adriaan Hugo. Bravely going where no Christmas fairy has gone before, the gallery stomps its democratic foot by bringing affordable art to all those who lead good and just lives and, thus, deserve to be continually inspired. Works available include the dramatic William Kentridge drypoint History of Art, a selection of the Penny Siopis Shame series, the post-modern intergalactic urbanity of Trasi Henen, Sam Hlengethwa’s Ode to Thelonius Monk, Kim Lieberman’s poignantly pregnant PSP etching on perforated philate, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt’s awesomely lovely Landing Strip monoprint series, and the Conrad Botes lithograph Foreign Policy, sure to bring the boys to their knees. Also expect to see Kim Berman’s sorrowful, beautiful KZN ponds, Claudette Schreuders’ oddball characters from The Long Day, a selection of Sam Hlengethwa’s rare photo-litho Township Series (along with his significantly lighter interior tributes to George Pemba and Esther Mahlangu), Judith Mason’s macabre muses and, for the sports-boy-lovers, Robert Hodgins’ macho Champ and Coach. In addition, find Kim Lieberman puzzles and awesome linen shirts by Erica de Greef. Buzzart runs at the KZNSA until January 6.
