NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Durban Art Gallery will host a memorial exhibition of the works of acclaimed local basket-weaver Reuben Ndwandwe, who passed away unexpectedly in June, 2007. Reuben Ndwandwe (1943-2007) comes from the Hlabisa area of Natal and is well-known for his superbly woven and unusual coloured baskets. This exhibition is a celebration of Reuben Ndwandwe's work and legacy and is organized in collaboration with Gilbert Torlage and Joanne Wilson from Provincial Museum Services. In his quiet and unassuming way, Reuben Ndwandwe not only exalted the status of the baskets woven from the ilala palm of the Kwa Zulu region, but he also broke down cultural barriers, taboos and mindsets, earning the respect of both the local and international community at large. More information from the Durban Art Gallery on 031 311 2264. The Durban Art Gallery is situated in the Durban City Hall, entrance in Smith Street opposite The Playhouse.
