STEPPING STONE STUDIOS (article first published : 2007-10-16)

Greg Streak, one of South Africa’s foremost contemporary fine artists, has opened a Stepping Stone Studios branch in Umhlanga, an established picture framing and custom-made mirror business.

A well-known contemporary sculptor, writer, curator, as well as founder and coordinator of the international artist initiative PULSE, Greg Streak has delivered papers and exhibited in solo and group shows in Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, India, Australia, Indonesia, the UK, Amsterdam, the US and South Africa. He studied at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam and has recently been awarded the prestigious Ampersand Fellowship in New York.

Stepping Stone Studios falls under the umbrella of threesixty design lab, Greg Streak’s commercial venture into space conceptualisation, design, sculptural detailing and manufacture as well as multimedia production.

Located on the Umhlanga Ridge, threesixty design lab is the commercial outlet for Greg Streak that works with architects and designers as well as independently in the capacity of space conceptualisation, sculptural detailing and manufacture. Having been extensively trained as a sculptor and in new media, Greg Streak has an uncanny ability to create something fresh – not easy in a time where everything has started to look like a variation of itself.

His fine art background brings a quirky yet sophisticated edge to his solutions, be it wall surfacing, solving space issues or designing and manufacturing specific details for corporate, community or residential spaces.

The shop offers a range of carefully selected, original fine art limited edition prints, oil paintings on canvas and ceramics of high-profile artists from South Africa and abroad. In addition, it sells unique design stock - from smaller, quirky items to larger, custom-made objects. Greg Streak personally consults clients on request.

Stepping Stone Studios stocks more than 200 sample frames. While these include a range of standard, generic frames common to most suppliers, almost half of the sample range is a selection of custom-moulded, natural wood-surfaced frames that come in numerous different finishes. These are exclusive and have become the signature separating this framing business from its competition. Stepping Stone Studios also provides acid-free mount board and foam core backing for the conservation of original artwork.

The Umhlanga branch caters for everyone’s needs – from the framing of a single child’s drawing, prints, paintings and wall mirrors to massive corporate contracts. It also manufactures box frames for memorabilia or other personal mementos.

Stepping Stone Studios (incorporating threesixty design lab) is situated at Unit 11, The Lighthouse, Equinox Road (off Millennium Boulevard), Umhlanga Ridge. More information from Greg Streak on 084 568 8902 or e-mail: greg@iburst.co.za
