FATHER CLAERHOUT EXHIBITION (article first published : 2007-09-21)

An exhibition of works by the late Father Frans Claerhout is running at the Anton Benzon @ Crouse Art Gallery, comprising items from private collections and those from the Crouse collection which will be on sale.

Acclaimed Flemish-born artist Frans Claerhout, who died last July in a Bloemfontein hospital aged 87, was a highly-acclaimed expressionistic painter with works characterised by warm colours, impasto and elongated human forms. A self taught painter in oil of landscapes and figures, he also worked in pastel, ink, pencil and charcoal.

Born in Belgium in 1919, he became a Catholic priest and came to South Africa as a missionary in 1946, ministering to the people of the Free State in Sotho for more than half a century. He started sketching and painting in the late 1950s in oil and a variety of other media, producing sculptures, murals, monotypes and linocuts. His artworks were exhibited in Belgium, Canada, Germany, the United States, United Kingdom and South Africa.

This will most likely be the largest body of work by Claerhout seen in Durban in recent years. Claerhout collectors have made their private pieces available for the exhibition, and Crouse Gallery will be have paintings, sketches and sculptures for sale.

Crouse Artdealers specialises in original South African art. They offer art of top artists like Anton Benzon, Diane Erasmus, Errol Boyley , Marie Vermeulen Breedt, Bea, Este Mostert, Annette Poulton, Luther Marais, Cornelius Bosch, Andre De Beer, Robert Domijan, Christian Nice, Gabriel De Jongh, Lienkie Lombard, Johan Smit, Chris Tugwell, Portchie, Ina van Schalkwyk and many more.

The Gallery is situated in 56 Adrain Road in Morningside Gallery and is owned by Michelle Dodds (who also runs the exhibition venue) and Chris and Suzette Crouse who have been dealing in South African Art for the past 12 years.
