NO LONGER AT THIS ADDRESS (article first published : 2007-09-8)

The Durban Art Gallery will host an exhibition about the name changes to many of the city’s streets and building. The exhibition, titled No Longer at this Address, is curated by Brenton Mart from the KZNSA and researched by writer/author Peter Machen, will have two areas of focus: anecdotal and documentary.

Five street photographers working with the Imvunge Street Photographers network will be shooting moments and images of eight of the streets and two of the buildings which are in the process of having their names changed. This interactive personal journey of images will explore what it means for a city to be evolving and embracing change.

The exhibition will also look at where the names of streets and buildings come from, looking at the people they are named after and their achievements and heritage and comparing the old to the new.

The exhibition will open at the end of September at the Durban Art Gallery which is situated in the Durban City Hall (entrance in Smith Street).
