SPECIMAN 97-07 (article first published : 2007-08-14)

Speciman 97-07 is an exhibition coming to the KZNSA Gallery which showcases old and new works by Peter Rippon representing his painting career over the ten years from 1997 to 2007. On show will be several old works representing the period from 1997 to 2005, and several new works from 2006 and 2007.

Based in KwaZulu-Natal, Peter Rippon is an oil painter with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the Durban University of Technology. This is his second solo exhibition, his first being his Master’s Degree show in 2004, entitled True Life Story.

In his work he touches on a variety of themes, including the body, attitudes to death, loss, and nostalgia. Dealing with death is considered morbid by some but this attitude illustrates the fact that in modern society we have developed an unhealthy relationship with death. It was only in the twentieth century that “death” became a dirty word. Of especial interest to the artist is the depersonalisation of death by science and medicine, and he alludes to this in many of his works.

One theme that underlies much of Peter Rippon’s work is that of containment. He often places his subject matter in recessed spaces or pressed up against the picture surface. This lends an intimacy to the paintings, which is further heightened by the small scale of the works and the meticulously detailed rendering of the subject matter.

Speciman 97-07 opens in the KZNSA Mezzanine Gallery on August 21 at 18h00 – all are welcome – and runs until September 9. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
