ART IN THE MALL (article first published : 2007-07-21)

The Pavilion Shopping Centre invites 50 artists to compete in a one-day art competition, as a part of a campaign that will change lives, and save others.

Along with other shopping centres in Durban, The Pavilion was encouraged to develop campaigns and events to raise awareness and help raise funds to establish a bone marrow registry in South Africa to aid leukaemia sufferers in the country.

The Pavilion came up with Art in the Mall, a concept which brings the campaign to the awareness of the consumers and visitors to the busy centre, as well as creating opportunities for said consumers to donate money to the cause by buying bandanas and/or gift cards.

The Sunflower Fund, in conjunction with The Pavilion Shopping Centre, will turn the month of August into a time of colour, art and creativity as well as a time of sharing, giving, and of hope.

The Pavilion will host Art in the Mall on the weekend of August 11 to 12. The Saturday will see 50 artists working in the mall to create a piece of art incorporating both a store design and a sunflower. Shoppers and visitors will be able to watch as these pieces are created.

Anyone out there with a paintbrush and a desire to turn an empty canvas into something that inspires hope and creativity in others, can take part. Entry is open to all kinds of artists whether studying art or design at a tertiary institutions, taking art as a school subject, making a living creating and exhibiting work, or if you are just the type who loves to express themselves through painting.

Participants will need to be available for a briefing session and press conference on August 6 and for the event on August 11. The prize giving will take place on August 12.

Those interested should send their name and contact details to leigh@ahoypr.co.za, or contact Leigh Vermaak on 031 201 4382.
