LINDIWE XABA WINS TOP PRIZE (article first published : 2007-07-21)

Lindiwe Xaba, (31) has won first place in the START THE NIVEA ART AWARD 2007

Lindiwe currently resides in Howick where she works at the world-renowned Ardmore Art Centre creating art ceramics, drawing and glazing. Apart from winning R20,000, she automatically qualifies for a solo exhibition at KZNSA’s new NIVEA Gallery.

Born in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal, Lindiwe grew up under the care of her grandparents and fell in love with drawing at a very young age. She was working at Ardmore Art Centre when her boss saw some of her drawings and identified that she had a unique talent. She was encouraged to participate in the classes at Ardmore where she was instructed on ceramic art and painting for a year.

“I am completely overwhelmed,” says Lindiwe Xaba. “This is the start of a successful path for me in the arts, a dream come true. Now my work can be taken seriously and I can gain more exposure. I am going to save some of the money to put towards educating my five children as I never had the opportunity to receive a secondary education myself. I am also going to buy art materials to start working on a solo exhibition.”

Lindiwe Xaba’s winning work was a unique acrylic on canvas artwork, entitled Izithandani (Lovers).

Second place went to Yvonne Sommeling-O’Brien who won R10,000 cash and third place went to Brenda Grant who won R5,000 cash.

START THE NIVEA ART AWARD is one of the successful initiatives born through the successful partnership between KZNSA Gallery and Beiersdorf (Pty) Ltd. The competition is aimed at identifying artists with great potential, who have not yet established their careers, and giving them the opportunity to create a work for a group exhibition. Beiersdorf also offers substantial cash prizes to the winners to assist them in getting their careers off to a flying start.

The START THE NIVEA ART AWARD exhibition runs at the KZNSA Gallery until July 29.
