ANIMAL TALES (article first published : 2007-06-23)

The African Art Centre is to host an exhibition by a group of eight woodcarvers who live in northern KwaZulu-Natal. On show will be a fascinating collection of carved wooden animals, birds, snakes, lizards, chameleon and insects which they paint in decorative patterns and then varnish.

The woodcarvers featured are Timothy Mlambo; Themba Khumalo; Bongani Khumalo; Sibusiso Ndlanzi; June Mpotshane; Widus Mtshali; Sibusiso Gumede and Samson Khumalo.

Timothy Mlambo is the main sculptor, who taught all the others. He was the African Art Centre’s artist of the year in 2005. He taught his brothers Themba and Bongani Khumalo, who in turn taught June Mpotshane and Sibusiso Ndlanzi. Timothy and Themba also taught others but on the condition that made their own style. This style is carved wood, left natural after which designs are burnt into the wood. Widus Mtshali is particularly creative. He makes whimsical and very creative animals, birds, and insects which often have a simple narrative. He taught Sibusiso Gumede and Samson Khumalo.

Animal Tales opens at 17h30 on July 11 and runs until July 29. The African Art Centre is situated at 94 Florida Road, Morningside, Durban. Contact 031 312 3804/5 or visit www.afriart.org.za
