IMAGES OF REMEMBRANCE (article first published : 2007-06-20)

The DUT Gallery on the Durban University of Technology‘s Steve Biko Campus in Mansfield Road is to host the Images of Remembrance exhibition. This comprises mixed media panels with photographs manipulated onto perspex produced by Lukas van Vuuren in 1998.

Lukas van Vuuren has an impressive list of exhibitions to his name. He has received numerous commissions and his works are in local and overseas public and private collections. He was invited by the Images of Remembrance committee to create the artwork for this exhibition which was based on photographs taken by Joey Rampersad, lecturer in the Durban University of Technology’s Department of Photography and his team of students.

The focus of this exhibition on “remembrance” is deliberate. Used constructively, memory can be an invaluable source of introspection, providing access to the past in our quest for understanding its lessons.

The Toward an Africa Without Border Conference will be running at DUT at the same time and it seemed appropriately fitting that Images of Remembrance revisited its earlier showing in 1998 when it was curated by Frances van Melsen.

Toward an Africa Without Borders is a student organisation based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the United States. TAWB is dedicated to opening borders, both physical and metaphorical. It is also commited to promoting unity and solidarity between groups in the Diaspora and Africa by facilitating strategic alliances and discussions that lead to partnerships for positive action in the name of Pan-Africanism.

This organisation has collaborated with DUT in putting together this conference.

Images of Remembrance will be officially opened by Prithiraj Ramkisun Dullay (a commemorated hero on the exhibition) on July 6 at 19h00. The exhibition then runs until August 3.
