INFUSION (article first published : 2007-06-18)

Running in the upstairs Reception Gallery at Bean Bag Bohemia is an exhibition titled Infusion ... something old and something new which features multi-layered works by Truida Norval. The works have a beautiful fragility, laced with the comforting nostalgia of warm cups of fragranced tea.

Now living in Port Elizabeth, Truida Norval was brought up on a farm in the Karoo where her mother used to make all of the family’s clothes. “In this era, she explains, “it was the role of the women to be the housewife and to cook and to sew. In creating my one-off artworks I try to reflect this feminine spirit and my Afrikaner heritage to self-sufficiency and living close to the land.

“I am inspired by my studies and background in fashion and soft furnishing design,” she continues, “and over the years I have created soft furnishing and knitted items for a few shops in Cape Town including LIM and Heartworks. More recently I have started to create artworks using a variety of objects and materials. My husband and I have lived in conservation areas for many years and this has also been a source of inspiration reflected in the black and white photographs that I took in Namaqualand and Namibia that I sometimes use as backgrounds. I also use recycled teabags, beads, old pattern paper, wool, silk, lace, buttons, paper, wax and pencil drawings. Many of my pieces combine these mediums with needlework to create an image that is light and fun.”

Bean Bag Bohemia is situated in Windermere Road near the Greyville Racecourse. For more information contact Tamlyn Martin on 074 407 5413.
