START THE NIVEA ART AWARD FINALISTS (article first published : 2007-06-17)

Some 25 finalists were recently selected for Beiersdorf’s START The Nivea Art Award 2007.

The finalists, all artists who have not yet established their careers in such avenues as prestigious solo exhibitions or previous art awards, were selected from photographs of their existing works.

The esteemed panel of judges - Nathi Gumede, Sfiso KaMkame, Storm Janse van Rensburg, Julia Meintjes, Anthea Martin and Gabisile Nkosi - hand-picked these talented artists from competition entries from throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

The finalists will each receive R1,200 from Beiersdorf to create a unique commissioned artwork. The theme is ‘moments of interaction between people, reflecting one or all of NIVEA’s core values: care, reliability, understanding, humanity, love and harmony’. The artwork must be able to hang on a wall, and should be a minimum size of 1 metre on any one side.

The works will then be exhibited for sale at an award’s ceremony and exhibition opening at the KZNSA Gallery on July 10 to which well-known art patrons and public will be invited. Three winners will be selected and announced on the night, and awards and cash prizes presented - first prize is R20,000 cash, second prize R10,000 and third R5,000. The exhibition runs from July 10 to 29 to allow the public the chance to view or purchase the works.

Now in its third year, START The Nivea Art Award has proved a phenomenal success in uplifting talented artists in the KwaZulu-Natal region to new heights. Many of the artworks from the previous year’s START exhibitions were purchased by Beiersdorf, South Africa and now brightly decorate the Durban head office for employees to enjoy for years to come.

Beiersdorf’s START The Nivea Art Award 2007 is collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts Gallery that seeks to create a platform for development in the field of visual art in KZN. The exhibition is a ‘must-see’, a highlight on the arts calendar, generating interest from all stakeholders of the arts both in KwaZulu-Natal as well as nationally.

This project is fully funded by Beiersdorf under the expert guidance of judges Anthea Martin and Storm Janse van Rensburg, as well as former KZNSA curator, Nathi Gumede.
