PERFORMANCE ART WORKSHOPS (article first published : 2007-06-11)

Spier Contemporary is an exhibition and a series of awards in the Visual Arts to be held in December 2007. Entries close in August. For more information go to www.spiercontemporary.co.za

Spier Contemporary recognizes that live performance is an increasingly prominent area of the visual arts. However, the creative spaces to invent, explore and develop performance across disciplines are rare. With this in mind, Spier Contemporary will present performance workshops facilitated by the co-curator, multi-award winning choreographer and UCT Associate Professor, Jay Pather. Formerly based in Durban, Jay is well-known to KZN audiences for his work with Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre.

The workshops are open to visual artists, architects, musicians, performers, directors and choreographers and will develop performance and multi media work amongst all artists who have an interest in performance and want to extend their ideas further.

The workshops aim at providing some of the necessary tools for the conception and execution of performance art. Pather (choreography) and a range of guests presenters such as Vaughn Sadie (light design); James Webb (sound) and Andrew Putter (visual arts) will present a three day workshop which will include experiences in the use of the body, time, rhythm, space, architecture, site- responsive and site specific work. There will be strong focus on accessing sense and emotional memory. There will be guidance on the use of mixed media and projection, the use of light and sound and the 'framing' of performance.

Participants will use the final day to collaborate across disciplines and create mixed media, site specific performances.

Workshops are free of charge and open to no more than 20 participants. They will take place in Durban from July 15 to 17 as well as in Johannesburg (July 20-22) and Cape Town (July 2628) running daily from 09h30 to 17h30 with an hour for lunch. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on site.

Participation is by application only. If accepted, participants will be required to participate in all sessions. Selection is final and no correspondence will be entered into. To apply send an email with the following details to jaypath@mweb.co.za
