DRAWINGS WITHOUT WORDS (article first published : 2007-06-3)

Drawings Without Words is a pastel drawing exhibition running at the BAT Centre which represents an outcome of a workshop by Jacquelyn Thunfors as well as from the concept of her book and recent exhibition. Her aim was to assist Durban artists to look beyond themselves to identify what the outside world or the buyer might want - not what they want to paint.

Jacquelyn Thunfors is a well-known Swedish-American artist who, on her return to South Africa in the April of 2007, launched a book titled Journalist Without Words-for you.

A well-matured artist who exhibited at paintings and drawings at the Durban University of Technology Art Gallery, Thunfors had previously worked with artists from the BAT Centre. This time around she decided to work with the resident BAT artists to create fresh art material for the Durban, KZN, and SA art world.

In the four-day workshop, the eight BAT Centre artists began the exercise without any prior preparation or understanding of what the workshop would be about. While eager to show their different capabilities, the artists found themselves engaged in a learning process of information and skills-sharing. They concentrated on different ideas with a notion of producing a final idea. They worked both independently and as a group to manifest their universal ideas which were explored in depth as they used recycled paper. The cheap quality of the paper allows the artist to be freer -without fear of wasting material.

Artists featured on Drawings Without Words are Lalelani Mbhele, Nozipho Mbhele, Xolile Mazibuko,Thabani Mthethwa, Philani Luthuli, Dumisani Dludla, Musa Mthembu and Bheki Ntshingila.

Drawings Without Words runs in the Democratic Gallery at the BAT Centre until June 10. More information on 031 332 0451.
