VERSTER FINALIST IN SASOL WAX AWARD (article first published : 2007-05-27)

Sasol recently announced the finalists of the second Sasol Wax Art Award. Selected from 154 of South Africa’s top artists, finalists Walter Oltmann, Wayne Barker, Sue Williamson, Usha Seejarim and Andrew Verster will go through to the final round of this prestigious award.

With total prize monies of R230,000, this award represents the top accolades for professional (mid-career) artists in South Africa. The judging panel was led by respected curator and artist Moleleki Frank Ledimo.

The five finalists will each receive R20,000 to produce a body of work for the Sasol Wax Art Award exhibition, to be held at the Johannesburg Art Gallery on September this year. The winner will be awarded R130,000.

The selection was made from proposals submitted by ten semi-finalists for a body of work using wax (one of Sasol's major products worldwide), either in process, medium or concept.

“As a chemical compound, not much thought is given to the ways in which our lives depend on, or are made easier or more pleasurable by a product like wax,” says Johan du Preez, Chairman of Sasol Wax. “For more than two decades, Sasol has been a committed sponsor of the visual arts, not only through our corporate collection, but also through the sponsorship of competitions and awards.

"As the world's largest producers of wax, as well as a sponsor of the visual arts, this award represents a unique marriage of these two concerns: art and industry The finalists are all highly accomplished artists, respected both in their home country, and internationally. Sasol is proud and privileged to be able to give them the opportunity and the platform to showcase their unique gifts."
