MARKS ON PAPER (article first published : 2007-05-6)

This is an exhibition that showcases the diversity and flexibility of the invited artists working and living in and around Durban and its surroundings. Under the guidance of Marianne Meijer and Pascale Chandler the KZNSA Gallery present Marks on paper.

The KZNSA has invited a number of artists to take part in this exhibition. The objective is to host an exhibition of drawings that present works which share mark-making as their origin, yet remain very different to one another. Some will be more aesthetic. Some more poetic. But with all of them there should be a secret visual quality.

The word “mark” has many different meanings. Words come to mind such as token, type, code, devise, motto, line, stroke, dash, trait, imprint, characteristic, dot, nick, etc.

Drawings can range (for example) from an original drawing for spare parts of a motor cycle for a car magazine to a lyrical portrayal of pigeons, a storm with lightning, or a portrait of one’s favourite aunt. (These are titles of drawings taken out of one edition of Frieze, a well-known American art magazine).

While ideas are open to the widest range of possibilities, all works should carry the stamp of the individual artist. The exhibition is presented in the Mezzanine and NIVEA galleries.

The following artists are represented: Rick Andrew, Andries Botha, Karen Bradtke, Pascale Chandler, Michael Croeser, Nathi Gumede, S’fiso KaMkame, Zamani Makhanya, Brigitte Maingard, Anthea Martin, Marianne Meijer, Nicole Pletts, Peter Rippon, John Roome, Nirmi Roome, Kay Smart, Paul Sibisi, Bernice Stott, Marlene Wasserman, Ingrid Winterbach, Bronwen Vaughan–Evans, Andrew Verster and Aidan Walsh.

Marks on Paper runs in the KZNSA’s Mezzanine and Nivea galleries until May 6. For more information contact curator Nathi Gumede on 031 277 1703 or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
